DJ SHADOW & CUT CHEMIST at mccaren pool
So checka checka check it out… the DJ Shadow and none other than Cut Chemist stepped to the stage last night showcasing their latest set aptly dubbed “THE HARD SELL”.
CONCEPT> A completely live and direct set on 8 turntables 4 mixers and a few efx pedals. Using not only original pressings of 12′’s ( which any follower would come to expect from the caliber of crate digger that is the SHADOW ) but all ORIGINAL 45’s……Or 7′’s to any common folk tuning in. That’s right those itty bitty records that your mom has of her favorite childhood tunes as it was the dominant medium for singles back in the day…
Now if you take the fact that its harder to cut and straight up manipulate a 45rpm record. Add that to the notion that finding truly slammin’ rare grooves that were once considered hits on 45’s is nearly impossible, and you would have to be a gifted archaeologist to get even a hand full of jams let alone enough for a two hour set.
Needless to say they definitely accomplished something here folks…
These two legends kept it moving with a monster set of mash-ups, live remixes and versions of widely known gems never to be heard the same way again…
In true patriarch form they continued to push boundaries by legitimizing the art of turntablism with a grand finally consisting of both CUT and SHADOW coming front stage with portable turntable and mixer set ups strapped to them like guitars at a rock show. As they crabbed and transformed as soloists over metallicas “one” (perfecting the stunt they revealed at their irving plaza show six months earlier) they left the crowd at least concious of one of the “movements” best war chants “VINYL CAN’T BE STOPPED”!
My only gripe….no hits….to me its just common courtesy to hit your crowd with at least a taste of what they know and love you for….Especially when your asking them to follow you boldly to where no man has gone before…
Well kids as I said we need to bring a little of that ol boom bap and all of that back to the NYC this was one that had it on display…
Check The Venue….I promise if nothing else while your there it will definitely feel like summer in New York City….Coming up same spot….THE BLACK KEYS……….WEEN……yea that’s right I’m checkin that as well not sold yet told i got to feel them live…..well here it goes….
